Poverty and crime rates Essay There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread† (Mahatma Gandhi). Poverty is being in a state that is extremely poor and basically inhabitable. The correlation between poverty rates and crime rates has been examined through many different perspectives and by many different people. The majority of people believe that crime rates are higher in more developed countries and lower crime rates in undeveloped countries. Personally, I believe the opposite that crime rates are higher in undeveloped countries and lower in developed countries. There are many factors that affect high crime rates in a deprived country. The factors that affect high crime rates the most are that people in a poor society can not afford what they wish, the crime rates are higher in poor countries because people are not well educated and lastly, the government of a developing country is not as strict compared to the government of a developed country. Therefore the crime rates are higher in an undeveloped country. There are many factors that affect crime rates the major one is poverty. Crime rates are higher in an undeveloped country rather than a developed country since people would tend to steal what they cannot afford. The first factor that would cause a person of a poor country to steal something is if they cannot afford what they want. For example, in Africa many people cannot even afford their personal and physical necessities. The small community of Africa cannot afford enough food to fill up their stomach for a single night and will therefore have to rob food for themselves and their family.. Another reason why people in a poor country would commit more crimes is since they cannot afford the luxuries that they desire. Even though luxuries are not a component of survival they still play an important role in self confidence. For example, Car theft is much more higher in South Africa compared to North America since the people in South Africa cannot afford the luxuries of Mercedes or Porsche and would therefore steal the expensive luxuries that they want to be equal to everyone else. Next, the people of lower income feel excluded from society since they feel that they do not â€Å"fit in† with the rest of the community. For example, if one is wearing bum company footwear and the rest of the people in the community are wearing Nike company footwear then the person whom is wearing the bum company footwear would feel excluded from the rest of the society. This would cause the person of lower income to steal the expensive footwear just so they dont feel excluded and higher their self esteem. Another reason why people who cannot afford what they want is due to the impact of jealousy on the lower income community’s mind. For example, Kristopher Gutierrez beat one of his best friends after realizing that he had a relationship with his girlfriend Kristopher is charged for aggravated assault1. This shows that jealous rage can cause one to commit any crime for revenge. Crime rates are higher in countries with more poverty since people do not have proper education. Firstly, the education system in poor countries is more weak therefore people in those poor countries are not well educated and do not know what’s wrong and what’s right. For example, statistics show that 121 million children worldwide are out of education2. This shows that children whom are becoming uneducated by dropping out of school at such a young age are not able to realize what’s wrong and what’s right. These 121 children would not be able to pursue their future career and earn a respectable amount of money since they would not have knowledge about the opportunities that are available to them. This would cause the children to get involved into horrible thing such as theft and burglaries. The teachers have probably also committed crime in their life. This would cause the teachers with wrong knowledge to teach their students the same knowledge they have. For example, if a teacher has the knowledge that crime and theft is alright and acceptable this teacher would teach their students that theft and crime is acceptable then the students would go off thinking it’s okay and possibly even commit crimes. Another reason that affects higher crime rates in an uneducated country is due to the parents of the students that are also not well educated and are therefore not a good role model towards their children. The children learn these horrible things by their parents. Since each family has their own values the children consider these crimes to be acceptable. For example, the parents of a poor family would probably have to rob clothing for their children. When the children realize that their parents stole clothing for them they will follow their parents and do the same. Additionally, the government systems of poor countries are much less strict towards crimes. Such as, the police control officers don’t carry many weapons and devices since they cannot afford them. In Canada, the police officers carry many weapons around with them such as guns, knives and GPS systems compared to Africa police officers can’t carry many weapons around with them maybe only one and cannot afford to purchase GPS. This would cause the community to think that it is easy to get way with committing crimes. Also, the police would have less control over the criminal since the criminal would bribe the police officer with money and most commonly the police officer would fall into this. Another reason why a more undeveloped country with an easy going government system would commit more crimes is due to the laws and punishments which are not strict and the criminals would feel that the punishment is manageable. For example, in South African countries such as Botswana the government system is less strict compared to a developed country such as Canada. The laws in Botswana for crime is more easy going if you are caught speeding then you can bribe the officer for money although the law in Canada obviously does not allow you to bribe the officer. This proves that the laws in Botswana are much less strict in comparison to Canada. Another reason that affects crime rates in a poor country is due to the fact that people feel committing a crime is easy to deal with and the police force is less committed to their job since the officers know that they would not get in much trouble even if they do not perform their duty properly. The government is less strict. For example, the community of Botswana and Africa feel that it is easy to get away with theft. This makes theft a much more common aspect of their life since it is so easy to commit and so easy to deal with the punishments. If one commits a crime in Canada they feel guilty and very afraid of the horrible outcomes such as all of the punishments and years in prison they have to deal with. Therefore, the population of Canada would tend to commit fewer crimes in fear of the outcomes. In conclusion, the crime rates are higher in an undeveloped country and this is proven by many aspects. Firstly, since people cannot afford what they want. The people of some undeveloped countries cannot even afford the necessities for survival such as food. Also the people of an undeveloped country cannot afford the luxury that they desire they feel excluded from society which causes them to commit crimes to achieve what they desire and to â€Å"fit in† with everyone else. Secondly, in undeveloped countries the society is not well educated. The population that is suffering through poverty does not know what is wrong and what is right. Therefore commit crimes thinking its okay to do. The students dont have a good role model to look up to since the teachers and parents have also committed crime in their past and the parents do not realize its unacceptable to commit a crime. Thirdly, since the government system is very weak and not so strict in comparison to the government system of a developed country. Due to the fact that the government system is not strict in a poor country the populations of that poor country feel that it is easy to get away with committing a crime. Also, since the police force is less committed to their duty they become bribed very easily especially with money. Additionally, since the laws and punishments of an undeveloped country are not strict the community commits crimes easily. Molecular Nanotechnology and Literature Imagine a world where you could have anything you wanted. Gold? Here it is. A new car? Presto. Diamonds? Oh, here, please have some of mine, there's more in the back. Of course, this is not our world at the present, but it might be the world of the future. Molecular nanotechnology will be able to provide whatever one needs or wants, for free or for a minuscule amount of payment. However, it will not only affect commercial and material goods. It will affect medicine, war and weaponry, law enforcement, espionage, entertainment, disposal of waste and garbage, and even literature. Literature will perhaps be affected in a greater way than one may think. But before I get to that, let me explain what, exactly, molecular nanotechnology is. In l 959, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman put forth an idea. His idea was that anything could be made from the ground up, out of individual atoms or molecules. This is nanotechnology: the working or manipulation of individual atoms or molecules, one at a time, and positioning and lining them up precisely and repeatedly, until enough accumulated to form a large-scale, usable entity. Feynman didn't name it and outline the science, however. This was done by K. Eric Drexler. In the 1970's, when he was a student at MIT, Drexler came up with an idea of nanotechnology, and outlined the possible uses of it. He thought that if one had the ability or technology to work with individual atoms and molecules, then one could make a box that would transform common materials into beef. It sounds strange, but that was the idea. The idea was that you could open the door, toss in some stuff, work the controls, and two hours or so later: out rolls some fresh beef. It sounds odd because we a re taught that beef comes from cattle, not from a box of grass clippings and old sneaker insoles. But it really does make sense. Cattle use only a few materials when making beef: grass, air, water, sunlight. When they are digesting that junk, they are merely rearranging the molecules to form characteristic patterns of beef. The only real difference between the methods of beef-production of cows and Drexler's box is that cows make beef using enzymes and liquids, where reactive agents randomly collide, and Drexler's box makes beef mechanically. Drexler states that the molecules and atoms would have to be manipulated by tiny, tiny robots, commonly referred to as "assemblers.

I do believe that these techniques are legitimate, effective methods of therapy due to its positive results without using pills and the variety of options in its treatments. Herman Melville is an acclaimed author of the American Renaissance period and his most commendable works include â€Å"Bartleby, the Scrivener†. The story of â€Å"Bartleby† is not only a revelation of the business world of the mid-19th century but at the same time, it is also the manifestation of the emerging capitalistic lifestyle of perhaps New York’s most prominent street, Wall Street. Bartleby is a rather peculiar yet captivating figure. Interestingly, Bartleby is the complete opposite of the narrator, in that we know a great deal about the life of the narrator, but almost nothing about Bartleby. The narrator is also shown to be a man with purpose, though self-serving, whereas Bartleby exists as an aimless being. â€Å"He ran a day and night line, copying by sun-light and by candle-light. This passage gives the impression that Bartleby had no choice in the matter but rather he was conformed into a set task with no deviation from it. As the story furthers, Bartleby demonstrates an extraordinary inclination to not do certain things. In many ways, Bartleby is an embodiment of Melville himself. Both Bartleby and Melville were writers of sorts and they were both proficient at what they did until came a period where they decide to stop doing what was asked of them and instead did what they preferred to. Alicia My Story Essay The main character in this story is a Jewish girl named Alicia. When the bookstarts she is ten years old, she lives in the Polish town of Buczacz with her four brothers,Moshe, Zachary, Bunio, and Herzl, and her mother and father . The holocaust experiencebegan subtly at first when the Russians began to occupy Buczacz. When her brotherMoshe was killed at a Boys School in Russia and her father was gathered up byGerman authorities, the reality of the whole situation quickly became very real. Her fatherwas taken away shortly after the Russians had moved out and the Germans began tooccupy Buczacz. Once the Germans occupied, they moved the Jewish population ofBuczacz into mass ghettos. Alicia and the rest of her family had to share a house withseveral other families which had also been driven out of there homes. The only source ofincome in this situation was to sell things at the marketplace, and even there, Jews wereforbidden. Alicia went anyway and sold what she could for food and money . One day her brother Bunio disappeared from the ghetto. Alicia and her familyfound out later that he had been taken to a work camp, but that they could send foodpackages to him. Shortly after this, Alicia was taken into custody by German officials andput on a train to another work camp. Alicia managed to escape from this train by jumpingthrough a small window. She found her way to a river which led her back to the ghetto. By this time several people in the ghetto had been feeling the effects of the impoverishedconditions. Starvation, Typhoid, and other diseases, were beginning to take its toll on thepeople who lived in the ghetto. Then one day, Alicia found out that her brother Bunio hadbeen killed in the work camp. A boy had escaped so they lined up all the boys and shotevery fourth one. As time progressed, Alicia began assuming more responsibility for the daily tasks of the family such as going out and trading for more food in places other than themarketplace. While this was going o n, Zachary and a few other boys from the ghetto hadbeen forming a sort of resistance. One day Alicia was informed that her brother had beenhanged. After Zacharys death, Alicia was befriended by a woman named Bella. She metmany good friends in the ghetto including a future friend as well as savior, Milek. Months later, Alicia and several other people were rounded up and sent to a prison inChortkov. Here the conditions were very poor. Every day more and more people weretaken out and shot. On the inside of the cells it was a cesspool of germs and diseases. Every morning the jailkeepers would go around the cell and kick people to see if theywere still alive. One of these times Alicia was taken for dead and put onto a wagon withother bodies. The driver of the wagon found her, nursed her back to better health andthen brought her back to the ghetto. During this time, before, and after she returned to the ghetto attempts to rid theghettos of Jews were called actions. To escape being caught by the German police whotook part in the actions, they built large bunkers to hide from their captors. After severalof these actions, the Buczacz ghetto had been emptied by more than half. At this point thetime came to move to a new ghetto. Alicia had been in this new ghetto only a short time when another action occurred. This time Alicia was captured and brought to a mass grave with a multitude of otherJews. Just when Alicia was about to be shot Milek took a gun from one of the shootersand began shooting other officers. Alicia took advantage of this opportunity, as she hadmany others, and ran for her life. She ran fast and far until she found herself coming into atown which was surrounded with tilled fields. She discovered she could work in exchangefor a small amount of food. She worked hard in these fields and was able to let hermother in Buc zacz know that she was safe.Alicia was reunited with her mother and theyreturned to this community where they lived for about a year. She also found out that heryoungest brother Herzl had been taken away and killed Alicia would work at these fieldsand get food, she would bring some back to her mother who, because of poor health, wasresting in seclusion most of the day.. One day they met a nice old man that was sort of anoutcast from the rest of the community. He let them stay with him and another Jewishfamily that he was taking care of in his shack. It was not long after Alicia had moved back into Buczacz that the Germans tookover the town again. In this raid on the Jews, Alicias mother was killed by the Germans. Alicia was taken to another prison where she would later be transported to another massgrave. While she was waiting, she devised a plan to escape the mass grave by runningdown a hillside and into a river. When they were lined up to be shot she ran to the river. She hid there all night and once again she had escaped the Germans. As she made her wayback, she became friends with a group Russian Jews who were fighting with the Russians. She even earned a medal from them because she had helped a number of them escape froma prison cell. Her bravery was not overlooked. Returning to Buczacz she found that there wasnt much left for her there, so shemoved away with a person to a nearby town. She was in this town less than a few hourswhen her and her friend were taken into custody by the Russian police. What hadhappened was that h er friend was suspected of selling things in the black market ( whichshe was ) and the police wanted to find out who was buying things from her. Over a spanof 8 months they were kept but finally they were released. They received a lot of moneyfrom people that had been saved by their withholding of evidence. Alicia and her friendtook this money and bought a train ticket to Lodz. They were stopped in Lvov becausethey went to get some tea while stopped at a station, but the train took off without themand they left all of their belongings on the train. Next they boarded a train to Krakow,and parted ways there. In Krakow, Alicia was staying at a rather large house with anotherfamily. She built a sort of orphanage by gathering up homeless children from theneighborhood. She lived with this family for a long time, and during this time she learnedabout a way that she could go to Eretz Island, Israel where she could be safe. She left herorphanage and went on a long journey where she met many people that were like her, inthat she didnt like to see people suffer. Alicia made it to Israel but was taken by British border patrol officers to a jail onCypress for coming into the country illegally. She was then released from Cyprus.
